Refurbishment of Ground Floor Restaurant and First Floor Function Room

Completed November 2008

Business relationships are crucial in todays economic climate, so when Richmond were once again asked back to Tedfords to build on the already effective design solution provided in 2006, it was evident that Alan and Sharon Foster valued Richmonds commitment to design and quality craftmanship.

Tedfords reputation was second to none and any work needed to retain, enhance and build upon this. The interior needed to be a platform for the dining experience and set the tone for the total experience.

Key elements to the ground floor had to be kept but the general finishes such as wall coverings, paint and furniture had to be changed. There was no question of replacing the fabulous Gustav Klimt paintings that envelope the space. The very colour composition inspiring the new scheme - golds and natural tones. Klimt’s eclectic use of influences including classical greek and byzantine imagery and colour are reflected in the new wall covering from Tektura - bold and evocative in pattern yet comforting in colour and balance. New chairs in walnut and cream leather complete this neo-period style solution.

The entrance area has been re-configured with a new decorative glass lobby screen that now directs the patron to the Maitre D instead of straight into the restaurant and alleviates draughts.

The first floor function room, used for private parties and as an over flow at peak times was always much more classic in interpretation with an almost ‘rococo’ feel of panelling and freeze rails with theatrical wall lights and mirrors. This space was and is popular so Alan and Sharon were adamant not to wreck the overall ambience. For the first time a design relationship would be made between the ground and first floors with the soft gold wall coverings carried on into the first floor panelling. The theme of golds is maintained with a ‘salt & pepper’ of specially commissioned 80/20 carpet in gold. The panelling and timber work are painted sympathetically to the wall covering panels and rich gold silk curtains complete the concept. What are essentially traditional high back dining chairs are given a new lease of life with blue and brown fabrics and reinforce the classic styling of the space.

Klimt believed in the freedom of art from traditional culture and Tedfords balance of fine dining and classic design marry into an experience of inspiration and influence
